Is tongues proof of being filled with the Holy Spirit?

Is tongues proof of being filled with the Holy Spirit?

I was just searching for information in your site after not finding the answer in the Bible, I wasn't brought up reading the Bible or for that fact knowing anything about God. Although I have been praying and searching for truths in his word for about 12 years, and I can't seem to find the answer to this question. Does there have to be a manifestation of tongues in order to be filled with the Holy Spirit?

My response is in Green:

No speaking in tongues is not the evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit. It was a sign in the early church but it was not what people claim tongues are today. Let me show you what I mean:

(Acts 2:6-12 NIV) [6] When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. [7] Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? [8] Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? [9] Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, [10] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome [11](both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" [12] Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"

Notice that these 'tongues' were known languages. The Holy Spirit enabled these Christians to preach in languages they had no knowledge of, not in some unknown language which needed an interpretation. This is where people go off into the weeds. This was a sign which pointed to the authority of the early church. Now there is also the 'gift' of tongues, but look at this:

(1 Corinthians 12:27-30 NIV) [27] Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. [28] And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? [30] Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

The clear implication of what Paul is saying is that not all believers speak in tongues. Could he mean that all believers are not filled with the Holy Spirit? Hardly, so we know that tongues are not a sign of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Here is one more:

(1 Corinthians 14:5 NIV) I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Again the clear implication is that not everyone speaks in tongues, plus Paul says he would rather have them prophesy. Here is something to think about; how could a person prophesy without being filled with the Holy Spirit? He couldn't, so Paul is not saying he would rather have them prophesy than be filled with the Holy Spirit.

My question is about speaking in tongues. Some believe that this gift is given to prove a person has been filled with the Holy Spirit." Initial Evidence doctrine." How would you explain this to a person that this doctrine isn't true?

You asked a good question and it is one that many people ask. I would like to quote three passages to you and let them speak for themselves:

(1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV) [7] Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. [8] To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, [9] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, [10] to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. [11] All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

(1 Corinthians 12:28-31 NIV) [28] And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. [29] Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? [30] Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? [31] eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

(1 Corinthians 14:5 NIV) I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Notice in the first passages it says that the Spirit decides what He gives to each person. In the second passage Paul uses a rhetorical question, but the point is clear, not everyone speaks in tongues. In the third passage Paul goes to far as to say that he would rather that people prophesy than speak in tongues. Now if tongues is proof of salvation that passage would be very strange in deed.

Tongues is a gift given by the Holy Spirit to whomever He wishes to give it too. We have no control over which gift we get and all gifts are given for the common good. If tongues were the sign of salvation then Paul would not be wanting people to desire the other gifts instead.

People do the same thing with baptism. Because there are a couple passages that say that whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, they assume that baptism is what saves a person. Yet Paul again makes the statement that he is glad he did not baptize anyone at Corinth. That would be pretty strange if baptism was required. People need to take the Bible as a whole and not just portions and ignore the rest.

Christianity & Islam

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three closely related religions. Because they all revere Abraham and certain other patriarchs mentioned in the Hebrew Scriptures, Christian Scriptures and Qur'an as their spiritual ancestors, they are sometimes called Abrahamic religions.

About the religions themselves:

Name of the religion: Christianity Islam
Meaning of the name: Believer in Christ (a Greek word meaning Messiah). Submission to the will of God.
Name of a believer: Christian. Muslim.
Date of founding: circa 30 CE. 1 622 CE. 2
Name of founder(s): Yeshua of Nazareth (aka Jesus Christ, (pbuh) 3 & Paul. Most religious historians credit Muhammad (pbuh) as the founder. 3 However, Muslims generally regard Islam as dating back to the time of creation
% of world's population as followers: 33%. 20%.
Worldwide growth rate in numbers of members 4 2.3%/year. 2.9%/yr.
Growth rate of the religion as a % of the world's population: About 0.0%. Numbers have been static for decades. Increase of about 0.6%/yr.
Estimated year when Islam will become the most popular world religion: 2023 CE (if above numbers are valid) to beyond 2200 CE (as estimated by some religious futurists)
% of U.S. population as followers: 2001 ARIS study estimates 76%, and declining. 2001 ARIS study estimates 0.5%; some Muslim groups estimate 6 million (2%).
Major traditions or denominations: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Protestant, and others. Shi'ite, Sunni, Sufi. Sufi is a mystical tradition.

Beliefs:

Name of the religion: Christianity Islam
Concept of deity: Most believe in the Trinity; three persons in one Godhead: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God (Allah) is one and indivisible. They believe in a strict monotheism. "Allah" means God in Arabic.
Status of Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus Christ): Generally considered the Son of God, worshiped as God; one person of the Trinity. Very highly respected as the second-last prophet; next to Muhammad in importance.
Birth of Yeshua: Conservatives: virgin conception.
Liberals: conventional birth.
Virgin conception.
Death of Yeshua: Executed by Roman Army circa 30 CE. He was not killed, or suffered death. Muslims believe that he ascended alive into heaven. 2
Yeshua's location Ascended into Heaven Ascended into Heaven
Identity of "another helper" or "comforter" * Holy Spirit Muhammad
Second coming of Jesus Conservatives: expect in near future. Liberals: varied. Anticipate his second coming in the future.
Status of Adam: Disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden. Free from all major sins and faults. Some regard him as a prophet.
Main holy book: Bible 6 Qur'an 7
Original languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek. Arabic.
Status of the holy book: Conservatives: the inerrant Word of God. Liberals: a historical document. God's word and final revelation, dictated by angel Gabriel.
Additional guidance: Writings of the leaders of the early Church. For Roman Catholics: church tradition. The Hadith -- sayings of Muhammad (pbuh).
Ethic of reciprocity (Golden rule): "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." Matthew 7:12 "Not one of you is a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." Fourth Hadith of an-Nawawi 13
A baby's status at birth Various views. One is that a baby is born with a sin nature, separated from God. Baptism restores the connection. All babies are a born in a pure state of submission to Allah. However, as they mature they are often taught other beliefs.
Life after death: Either Heaven or Hell. Catholics believe in Purgatory as a third, temporary, state. Paradise or Hell.
Basis of determining who goes to Heaven or Paradise: There is no consensus in Christianity. Different faith groups hold Various diverse beliefs: trusting Jesus as Lord and Savior, good works, church sacraments, baptism, avoiding the undefined unforgivable sin. Once they reach puberty, his/her account of deeds is opened in Paradise. To attain paradise, at death, their good deeds (helping others, testifying to the truth of God, leading a virtuous life)... must outweigh their evil deeds.
Confessing sins: Roman Catholic: to God or Jesus, either directly or through a priest; Others: to God or Jesus To Allah
Probably the most misunderstood term: Immaculate Conception: Roman Catholics believe that the conception of the Virgin Mary, circa 20 BCE, was without sin. Many incorrectly relate it to Yeshua's' conception. Jihad: internal, personal struggle towards the attainment of a noble goal. Many incorrectly equate it to "holy war."

* From John 14:16: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."

Prayer that can change youe life

1. God Loves You!

The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life"

The problem is that . . .

2. All of us have done, said or thought things that are wrong. This is called sin, and our sins have separated us from God.

The Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God is perfect and holy, and our sins separate us from God forever. The Bible says “The wages of sin is death.”

The good news is that, about 2,000 years ago,

3. God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins.

Jesus is the Son of God. He lived a sinless life and then died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. “God demonstrates His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”

Jesus rose from the dead and now He lives in heaven with God His Father. He offers us the gift of eternal life -- of living forever with Him in heaven if we accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me."

God reaches out in love to you and wants you to be His child. "As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name." You can choose to ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come in to your life as your Lord and Savior.

4. If you want to accept Christ as Savior and turn from your sins, you can ask Him to be your Savior and Lord by praying a prayer like this:

"Lord Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Please forgive my sins and give me the gift of eternal life. I ask you in to my life and heart to be my Lord and Savior. I want to serve you always."

Did you pray this prayer?

What is ISCF ?

ISCF was set up with the idea of the inter-school Christian students’ movement. By the way, students attending different churches are link together in a same school CF, such as the entity of different parts of the body with the same head of Christ. CF isn’t any religious club, but a place to realize what life really means. CF isn’t born for the sake of establishing a club, but instead, the only fellowship of love which one of the values “Sam Tet” means. We’re glad to see lives transforming here. We experience His Holy Spirit, His mighty power which keeps the passion burning within our hearts for Him. How wonderful His miraculous deeds without numbers in our lives. He’s just ineffably!

Is Christianity one of the enormous religions in the world? It’s definitely not so. Christianity is a belief leading us to the source of life & the way of living. As written, a stream flowing wider and bringing life to wherever it flows. In lives, men may be too weary of stress. As if we tend to be lost with many uncertainties in life. Especially us as young students, we’re still lacking experience & knowledge. It’s a simple situation, just imagine how dismay you’re in the dark without any aid. When the light comes in, hope is found. So, we mustn’t be in despair since the Lord had said, “For I’ve the best plans for you, they’re plans for good & not for disaster, to grant you a future & a hope”. He’s our stronghold, our fortress, our shepherd, our light of salvation, our strength of life. Though we walk through the valley of death, we’ll never be afraid for the Lord is with us. No distress can conquer us.

He indeed exists in a supernatural way, in the dimension beyond our knowledge. Throughout the ages, all men’s studies prove His presence through the field of history & science. How could the apostles once again gather together since Jesus died? Though the Roman soldier had guarded strictly around the tomb of Jesus, how could his body disappear? Count 500 people & you’ll savvy how many are there to witness the rising of Jesus. By no means, this can be falsified. How could this God endure throughout the history of mankind? His words were recorded by generations of different identities over ages. Martin Luther stood against the Indulgences for the sake of Christ which brought The Reformation in Europe during the end of Middle Age. The Americans’ fight for independence is related to Christianity. To date, all Christians still live out their testimonies. The miraculous changes of Christians’ lives are unexplainable with worldly wisdom. Many things yet unseen are beyond the understanding even of the greatest scientists & philosophers. In Australia, we see the revival of Hillsong United spreading to the entire world. Still then, our CF is moving with the world, pressing towards the goal for the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. We have experience enough love up to our brim & overflows, we’re desperate to share our goodness & grace from our beloved Heavenly Father. Through the reconciliation of Jesus Christ, we’re called upon His name to be His son. And we live to see the goodness & mercy upon us for evermore.

Sum them all, everyone who is eager to experience His realness irrespective of any discrimination of holiness or religious background is invited to join this group. The beginning of the New Testament emphasizes Christ Jesus humbly enter this world to be upon the cross paying the cost of salvation for everyone. He said, “…make haste & come down; for I must stay in your house today”. “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you…Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” All you need to do is to seek Him & judge the truthfulness of these words, the decision is in your hand. I can tell more & more, but to know Him starts with your action. This is also a group open to all Sam Tet students, Christians, other schools’ CF, churches, present CF members & as STCF alumni group.

Recess Revo

Recess Revolution is a movement/mobilization of young people who are maximizing “recess time” (“waktu rehat”) in schools to make a statement of what they believe in, and to make an impact by being a positive influence right where they are. It is a coming together of like-minded, “like-spirited” youths to do something* together in their schools with a mission to make the difference and bring about positive change (i.e. revolution)! It is not just about bringing people to Christ, but - even more so - about bringing Christ to people (and into schools)! *This blog is best viewed with Mozilla Firefox

Recess Revo

Once this came to me, Iwas & am really stirred to get this started. The following is my plan 2 bring CF on d move:
1. Promoting CF thru announcement during assembly at d beginning of nx yr
2. Promoting CF thru invitation card & bookmarks
3. Do as Amnda Ooi, clean d skul, as started by USST 30 yrs ago...today, we offer d skul by d end of dis yr
4. 2 verses on 2 pillars as d skul has promised thru Mr. Khong b4 his retirement
5. CF T-shirt
6. CF sports day by d end of dis yr
7. A study group at d library after skul/Saturday
8. A caring trip 2 orphanage/old folks home
9. Trip
10. Harvest event (Chinese New Year, Easter Day, Mooncake festival)
11. Go within d skul rules, i.e. no cheating in exams, speaking, actions show d glory of our Lord, show up even feel like playing truant 4 private study
12. B sensitive 2 d skul's cleanliness, pick up rubbish
13. Show deligence in studies & bring gud results
14. GO WITH RECESS REVO

Mt. 28:19 "Go therefore & make disciples of all nations" 20 "teaching them all that I've commanded you; and lo, I'm with you always, to the close of the age."

Whatever we do, carry them out with love as He'd first love us, nt 4 d purpose of boasting ourselves, but 2 our Lord God b d glory, we're d living testimony. Pray in both lips & tongues 4 CF together. Start wif prayer, seek 4 our counselor, Holy Spirit 2 fall upon us & burn our heart wif d passion fire. Thru d hindrances, we mz endeavour & b nt deceited by slanders of Baal, quiet time is absolutely important 4 our spiritual growth & health which will bring us physical effects.

Remember, "Man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." We dun know wat's going 2 happen between nw & then, but we're still wif our omnipotent, omnipresent as well as omniscient Lord. Fret nt b4 our stronghold, we're strong wif His presence. Many things yet unseen, bt by faith we trust...Heb 11
